Professional Flight
The Professional Flight program at Arizona State University
is a professional pilot curriculum leading to a Bachelor of
Science degree. This program provides a solid foundation which
prepares graduates for entry into the aviation industry as
major airline, commuter, business, corporate, or military
pilots. The program also prepares pilots for continued graduate
study in Masters programs within the College of Technology
and Applied Sciences and the Department of Aeronautical Management
Technology in Aviation
Management or Human Factors in Aviation.
The Professional Flight program combines academic studies
and flight training under Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 141 certification.
In-depth theoretical education and flight training leads to
the students obtaining their private pilot, commercial pilot,
and flight instructor certificates, and flight instructor-instrument
and multi-engine ratings. Additionally, the Professional Flight
program provides classroom and flight training focused on
airline procedures and multi-crew training. The level of emphasis
on this airline training is the capstone of this program and
it is what sets it apart from most flight training schools.
The unique theoretical program uses an integrated learning
model which incorporates personal computer-based flight simulator
programs for cooperative and collaborative learning, as well
as multi-engine flight simulators, to enhance long-term retention
and application of the academic training. The overall curriculum
concentrates on the technical, management, and computer-related
applications which are necessary to operate in the high-density,
complex modern airspace environment. The program also emphasizes
the critical thinking and cognitive, analytical, and communicative
skills which are so important for success in today’s
aviation industry.
Theoretical classes and flight
training are tightly integrated into a single, continuous
four-year undergraduate program. Students receive ASU credit
toward graduation only for flight activities or instruction
received at flight schools with which the University has contracted
for such instruction. However, consideration will be given
for flight experience, and theoretical training, received
before enrollment at the University. This will be accomplished
through a comprehensive examination and flight evaluation
process in the first semester of enrollment. Throughout the
program, students will participate in seminars to explore
career opportunities; at the conclusion of their studies,
students can apply for several flying, as well as non-flying,
internships
within the aviation industry.
