Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I just earned a private pilot certificate. Will I have to repeat the private pilot semester at your school?
A:
Yes. Students who apply for ab initio training must complete the program in its entirety. Students who enter the program with FAA certificates and ratings need not repeat their FAA checkrides, but they must complete all course requirements.

Q: Can I just complete the multi-engine and jet semesters through your programs?
A: YES. You can apply for the PACE program at San Juan with instrument/commercial single-engine certificates as long as you have a minumum of 200 total flight hours. You can complete your multi-engine and commercial add-on at San Juan College.

Q: I already have a college degree (MA, BA, AA, etc.) or have completed some college-level classes. Will my credits transfer?
A: Possibly: Students who are accepted into the program and admitted to any of our partner schools will need to send in official transcripts from previously attended schools to the Office of Admissions and Records for a formal evaluation. If the student has completed comparable course work at another institution, the schools may grant transfer credit. But each school will have to be contacted directly for every potential student’s credit situation.
Students are required to complete all general education course requirements in addition to the core requirements regardless of previous college experience. For example: As a marketing major, you probably were not required to take Physics. This program requires Physics.

Q: I come from a college or university that was under a quarter system. How will that affect my course transferability?

A: When students transfer from a quarter system to a semester system, generally only two-thirds (2/3) of the credit will be taken. For example: you had 3 quarter hours in Public Speaking at your previous college. If this course were to transfer, you would receive 1.98 semester hours. However, if the Public Speaking course was 5 quarter hours, this course would probably transfer in as a 3 credit hour course and therefore meet the requirements of this program.

Q: Will the participating schools accept partial credit for transferability?
A:
No. You must meet the credit hour requirements for each course as specified in the degree plan.

Q: I have no desire to earn another degree. Can I just take the aviation courses?

A: No, this is not an option.

Q: If I am awarded transfer credit, will that shorten the length of the program? Will it reduce the cost of the program?
A: Receiving transfer credit may produce a slight saving in tuition for some students, but does not reduce or eliminate the bulk of any of the school program costs.

Q: I have never attended college. How will this affect my being considered for entry into the program?

A: Previous college credit is not required for acceptance into any of the programs. However: all the flight programs are highly intense, requiring a great deal of focus, maturity, and excellent study skills. Academic staff at each of our partner schools can directly address your concerns and help you to decide what your options might be.

Q: As a student in the aviation program, will I have time to hold a part-time job?

A: Many of our students have part-time jobs. Full-time jobs are highly impractical. Your ability to work part-time may depend on what kind of student you are. If you have good study and time management skills, working part-time is manageable and probably healthy for you as well because it gets you out in the community and gives you a break from studying. However, if this will be your first college and flight training experience, you may find that you want to get accustomed to your student responsibilities before you take on employee responsibilities as well. We encourage you to contact each school individually to learn more about potential part-time job opportunities.

Q: What are the minimum requirements for employment with Mesa for a first officer position?
A: Mesa requires a minimum of 500 hours in total time. You must have a minimum of 100 hours in multi-engine time, preferably in complex aircraft. However, if you graduate from the ab initio pilot development program at San Juan, ASU or Midland, you have the opportunity to become a first officer with less! Historically, graduates of the program have approximately 250 hours. If you don't want to become a CFI to build time, you don't have to!

Q: Where can I send my application for flight officer employment?
A: Please send applications to:

Mesa Airlines Corporate Offices
Personnel Department
410 N. 44th Street
Suite 700
Phoenix, AZ 85008

Fax resumes to Mesa Airlines, Pilot Hiring, 602-685-4569.
